A new and improved Spatial Solr

November 18th, 2009 by Preeti Gholap
(http://blog.jteam.nl/2009/11/18/a-new-and-improved-spatial-solr/)

Introducing the Solr Spatial Plugin

What do a directory services company, a wholesaler of bathroom fittings,  a social events guide, an oceanographic data centre and the pan-European library initiative have in common? They all need to offer their clients the ability to search and filter results within a flexible geographic area, defined by the user.

With a variety of businesses needing to customize search results to the preferences of a narrowly targeted audience, there’s an increasing demand for incorporating geographical location information into standard search functionality.

In response, JTeam has recently launched the Solr Spatial Plugin (SSP): a free, standalone, enterprise-ready plugin enabling location based search, built on top of the open source project Apache Solr.

Evolution of a support process (part 2)

This blog entry is part 2 out of the series, where I discuss the process to structure support and maintenance work, at JTeam.

In the previous part (part 1) of this series, I’ve discussed our first setup for a support structure in our company. As I said, this setup is not used anymore due to several reasons. In this blog post, I’ll clarify these reasons and take you in on our second setup of the support structure.

Evolution of a support process (Part 1)

September 23rd, 2009 by Dennis de Boer
(http://blog.jteam.nl/2009/09/23/evolution-of-a-support-process-part-1/)

This blog entry discusses the internal process at JTeam to structure our support and maintenance work, and at the same time exceeding the client’s expectations.

As you might know, if you are a regular reader of this blog, JTeam is a software development company. We develop enterprise applications for our customers. See for example our blog post about the Paazl project for a description of one of our projects. After implementation, these applications often will be maintained and developed further by the customer’s own development team or is being outsourced. There are however some projects which stay at JTeam. We keep on maintaining the project and implement new features.

These kind of projects require a different type of development and management process than the other projects. Especially the support work for these projects (i.e. bugfixing) is something that involves a whole different approach.

Here at JTeam we’re constantly looking for ways to improve our development and management processes. This is why we wanted to create a better way to handle these support issues.

This blog entry discusses this process. It will feature multiple parts, so you can follow our strategies and conclusions. Maybe it will help you to find the perfect process for your own business.

DDD and modern software development

September 8th, 2009 by Jettro Coenradie
(http://blog.jteam.nl/2009/09/08/ddd-and-modern-software-development/)

One of the main things we do @ jteam is creating rock solid custom development. Of course we use proven frameworks, we keep innovating and we use a lot of the best practices for custom software development. Best practices I am talking about are: Continuous Integration, Test Driven Development, Peer reviews and of course Scrum. I guess I could use more buzz words in there, but that is not the scope for this item. So I am not going to talk about cloud, soa, virtualisation to name a few. This post is about why DDD is a match made in heaven with custom development.

We just installed a nice Wordpress plugin that displays our blog post in a much more mobile-friendly manner (both visually and in terms of bandwidth). Check it out on your iPhone or Android phone or check out the screenshot if you don’t have one. Kudos to Jettro for telling me about this plugin.

You can install the plugin directly from Wordpress by searching for: WPtouch iPhone Theme

JTeam Technology Matrix: The Stars

September 7th, 2009 by Bram Smeets
(http://blog.jteam.nl/2009/09/07/jteam-technology-matrix-the-stars/)

In Alef’s previous blog entry about the JTeam Technology Matrix, he explained the basic idea of using a BCG-matrix to classify technologies. In this blog entry I’ll focus on the ‘Star’ section of our current matrix and highlight some of the technologies that are currently in there. Star technologies are the technologies that bring us added value in the projects that we do, but are also cool and innovative to use. Please keep in mind that the content of the matrix is under constant discussion and is subject to change. This overview should therefore be considered a snapshot of today’s matrix.

Project: welke.nl

July 23rd, 2009 by Allard Buijze
(http://blog.jteam.nl/2009/07/23/project-welke-nl/)

The Welke Magazine has been around for a while now and is a well-established name in the home decoration area. To follow up on the success of their paper version, MediaMij –the company publishing these magazines– decided to expand their position in the market by launching an electronic version, welke.nl. The goal of this website was to give their readers a more interactive experience and allow them to find more products that could be of interest in an intuitive manner.

In this post, I will focus on some technical and organizational topics that were addressed during the project. Read the rest of this entry »
